The Quest for Element 118

The discovery of oganesson represents the culmination of decades of research into superheavy elements. First reported by Russian scientists at the Joint Institute for Nuclear Research (JINR) in Dubna in 2002, this achievement marked a significant milestone in nuclear physics and chemistry.

The Discovery Team

Led by Yuri Oganessian, the research team included scientists from multiple countries. The element was later named "oganesson" in honor of Yuri Oganessian's contributions to superheavy element research, making him only the second living scientist to have an element named after him.

Confirmation and Recognition

The discovery was confirmed by independent research groups, and in 2016, the International Union of Pure and Applied Chemistry (IUPAC) officially recognized the discovery and approved the name "oganesson" with the symbol "Og".

Oganesson is created by bombarding californium-249 targets with calcium-48 ions in cyclotron accelerators. Only a few atoms have ever been produced, making it one of the rarest substances known to science.
